We made some homemade gingerbread decorations with some friends. The kids had a great time doing this and it was fairly unmessy (is that a word?) To make your own mix equal amounts of apple sauce and cinnamon. We put our mix in a ziplock bag and let the kids mix it. Add cloves or pumpkin spice if you would like a twist on the smell. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut with cookie cutters. Lay on cookie sheet and let dry 24 hours. Don't forget to poke a hole in them to thread your string. I had bought cheap apple sauce that was quite runny, I just added some flour to it to thicken it up and it worked good.
